A Year Later

Dallas, Texas

Jake and Anna drove through the streets of Dallas on the way to Jake’s home. He had just picked up Anna from Tamara “God-damn the Bitch” Larson’s crappy little house. Her behavior was getting more and more irrational, and his attorney figured it was just a short matter of time before she cooked her goose with the court, and Jake could successfully sue for custody.

They pulled into the driveway. Jake parked the car and they both clambered out of the car. Anna went running excitedly into the house ahead of him. She had been bouncing off the walls all the way over from her mom’s get to here to see Erin.

“Mommy! Mommy!” she heard Anna’s voice shouting from inside the house.

“Anna, I missed you so much!” she heard Erin say as he entered the house.

Inside he saw the new Mrs. Jake Larson hugging Anna tightly. In one arm, Erin cradled the new baby, Jacob Larson, Jr. Everyone called him “JJ.”

“Can I hold baby JJ?” Anna asked, bouncing with excitement.

“Yes Anna, but please calm down!” Erin said, laughing.

Erin had Anna take a seat on the sofa and showed her again how to hold the six-week old JJ properly. Anna beamed as she held her new little brother.

Jake had been surprised that Erin didn’t get pregnant their first month together. They had gone at it like rabbits for weeks. For weeks he drug his ass to work exhausted every morning.

Robin, his smartass assistant, gave him a knowing grin every morning. One day, she just came out and asked him.

“Jake, does the reason you’re so damn tired all the time have anything to do with that nanny of yours?”

“Why do you ask?” he asked.

“Well, you’re tired as hell all the time, and you can’t wait to get out of here every day to get home, and you talk about Erin incessantly.”

Jake sat silently, not saying a word, merely staring back at Robin.

“Someone’s in love!” she challenged him.

“Could someone bring me a cup of coffee?”

“Ha! I knew it!” Robin strode from the room with her usual “kiss my ass” attitude.

A couple of months later, Jake came home to find Erin waiting for him. She had a worried look on her face.

“What’s the matter, baby?” he asked her.

“Well, I went to the doctor today.”

“Oh?” he asked. “What for?”

“Jakie, I’m pregnant.” She looked him with a crestfallen look.

Jake broke into a broad grin, swept her in his arms and swirled her around in a complete circle before putting her down and letting out a “Yahoo!’ that would have made a Texas cowboy proud.

“I thought you’d be mad at me!”

“Are you fucking kidding! I’m ecstatic!” Jake was struggling to contain himself, and doing a poor job of it.

Erin fell into his arms and began smothering him with kisses.

“But you know what this means, right?” he said seriously after breaking away from her.

“What, Jakie?”

“You’re gonna have to make an honest man out of me.”

“You mean…” she started to ask.

“Yeah, I want you to marry me.”

She looked at him and said nothing.
